Meet Your Instructor
Hi, I’m Matthew Lyons, founder of Teach Music Production! I’m a music educator, author, and speaker who believes that anyone can learn to make music with the right guidance, a little practice, and a willingness to experiment.
For over 20 years, I’ve helped students and teachers discover new ways to learn, create, and express themselves through music. I specialize in music production and songwriting, helping people use technology to bring their musical ideas to life.
I created Teach Music Production to make learning music production easier, more practical, and more accessible. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to develop your skills, my goal is to help you understand the tools, explore your creativity, and make music you’re proud of. You don’t need to know everything before you begin—you just need a place to start!
Alongside my decade of focused experience in music production education, I hold a bachelor's degree in Music Education from San Diego State University, a master's degree in Curriculum Design from the University of San Diego, and a master's degree in Music Technology from the University of Valley Forge. I’m also Avid-certified in Pro Tools and Sibelius.
I’m passionate about helping people discover what they can do with music and technology. I’m here to share what I’ve learned, break down complicated concepts into manageable steps, and help you grow as a music maker—one project at a time.

What Lessons with Me Look Like
From creating beats and melodies to producing complete original songs, during lessons students learn music production by making music. I provide a supportive space where they can experiment, develop their own sound, and build skills at their own pace.
Each lesson introduces at least one new digital audio workstation (DAW) skill, such as editing MIDI, and at least one new musical element, such as rhythm, melody, or harmony. Step by step, students turn their ideas into music that reflects their creativity and personal style.
Lessons are 30 minutes on Zoom for grades 4–12. All students need is a computer, internet, and BandLab, a free online DAW. No music experience or music-reading skills needed.
